MUMBAI DIARIES (Page 8) (VEERMATA JIJABAI BHOSALE UDYAN)

Me and My Parents were at Fort visiting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. After that we decided to go to Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan. It is a zoo and garden located at Byculla in Mumbai, India locally known as Byculla zoo. It is one of the oldest zoo in India. It was established in 1861. It was formely called as Ranichi Bagh and Victoria gardens. It is a perfect place for a family outing and especially for kids.  We took a taxi from fort to Byculla zoo. Taxi driver stopped the taxi infront of the entrace gate of the Zoo. As, some renovation work was going on there. So, that gate was closed and we have to walk for approximately 1 km to reach another entrance. There was no proper direction signs to the zoo. We were just walking with an idea and in midway we asked a person about the zoo and he told us the way. Finally, we reached there. Entry fee is nominal Rs 5 per individual and Rs 10 for carrying Digital camera. Entry time of the zoo is 10:30 am to 5:30 Pm. The security don't allow you to take any food items and water bottles inside the zoo except Personal water bottle as people may feed animals and throw plastic bottles inside the zoo area.

There are no proper directions indication inside zoo. The Zoo was not well maintained and the first impression which I got of the zoo was not impressive. The first animal we encountered was Hippopotamus submerging in the water. The area was stinking I don't know why? On the left side there was a cage with a large Python. I get a creepy feeling whenever I see a snake.

I was little disappointed with the condition of the zoo. As such renovation is going on. So, hopefully my experience will be much better when I will visit next time.
We clicked some pictures here and there. Walking some distance we saw three- four deer in a cage. There were different types of birds, Emu, two old Elephants, Monkeys, Crocodile. Penguins are the new addition to the zoo. We were not able to see them as at that time they were not there.
